On Ethereum, gas measures the work a transaction requires. The fee depends on that work and the price of gas when the transaction is included. A token’s market price and the fee needed to move it are separate numbers.

Review the wallet’s estimate before approval and keep enough of the network’s fee asset available. Interacting with an application can cost more than a simple transfer. An approval may also grant a contract permission to use tokens: inspect the permission as well as the fee.

Layer 2 networks can offer a different cost structure. Check whether your wallet, exchange and recipient support the same network. Include bridging costs and the process for withdrawing funds in your comparison, rather than judging by one inexpensive transaction.

Read the transaction estimate

Review the action as well as its cost. A transfer, an application interaction and a token approval can have different effects.

Check the network shown by the wallet. The same account interface can display balances on several networks.

Understand what you authorise

Read the recipient or contract and the spending permission requested. An inexpensive approval can still expose tokens to an unwanted contract.

If the request is unclear, stop and read official application documentation. Do not rely on an unsolicited message to explain a signature.

Compare the complete route

Include funding, bridging and withdrawal costs when evaluating another network. Check support at the final destination before moving funds.

Keep enough of the required fee asset for the next step. A low transfer fee is less useful if you cannot complete the intended withdrawal.

A practical checklist

  • Check the network in the wallet.
  • Review the action and permission.
  • Include every step in the cost comparison.

Common questions

Does a lower fee mean a safer transaction?

No. The fee does not assess the recipient or contract permission.

Can I choose any network at withdrawal?

Only use a route supported by both the sending and receiving services.
