The practical choice
Shortlist Kraken Pro if its available markets and funding route suit your transaction. Consider Coinbase Advanced if you already use Coinbase and want order controls within the same account. Compare the actual preview, your fee tier and the complete withdrawal route before choosing either.

This is a comparison of published provider documents, not a hands-on test or a security audit. Sources and the review date are listed below. Fees, features and eligibility can change; check the provider's current terms and your account before acting. How this comparison was prepared
A useful comparison starts with the same transaction on both platforms: the same asset, funding currency, order size and withdrawal destination. Comparing a card purchase on one platform with an order-book trade on the other mixes two different products. This guide compares Kraken Pro and Coinbase Advanced for ordinary spot trading; derivatives, leveraged positions and onchain DEX features have separate terms.
For a Nordic user, the most important practical questions are whether the exact market is available to the account, how money reaches it, and what happens after the purchase. An attractive trading rate can be outweighed by currency conversion or a withdrawal charge. Neither platform is automatically the least expensive for every user.
Compare Pro with Advanced, not the brand names
Kraken separates instant purchases from its Pro spot order book. Coinbase similarly distinguishes a simple quoted purchase from Advanced. Coinbase says switching to Advanced preserves the account's balances and history. That may make the workflow convenient for an existing user, but familiarity alone does not establish a better execution price.
Both interfaces require understanding the order submitted. A limit order sets a price boundary but may remain unfilled. It is not automatically a maker order: an immediately executable limit order can take liquidity. Decide whether price certainty or prompt execution matters more for the specific transaction.
Read your tier before comparing costs
Kraken's current schedule describes tier qualification using trading activity and assets on the platform, with separate schedules or exceptions for some products and pairs. Coinbase directs users to their signed-in Advanced fees page; its criteria can include trading volume or qualifying USDC balances. A rate copied from an old review may therefore describe neither account today.
For a calculated example, a EUR 1,000 Kraken Pro spot order at the published Tier 1 rate gives EUR 8 at 0.80% taker or EUR 4 at 0.40% maker, before funding, currency conversion, slippage and withdrawal. This is arithmetic using the fee schedule checked on 16 October 2026, not an executed trade or a complete quote. A limit order can still be a taker if it immediately matches another order. Record your actual funding and withdrawal previews before comparing the final amount received.
An order book still has trading friction
Coinbase says it does not add the spread used in its simple purchase quote to Advanced trades. That does not remove the market's bid-ask spread or the possibility of price impact. Large market orders can execute at several prices. Examine the relevant pair and order size rather than treating a displayed last price as a guaranteed fill.
For qualifying EEA Advanced orders, Coinbase documents an automated auction comparing liquidity partners with its order book. Users can disable this routing feature. This matters when comparing execution policies: an advanced interface does not necessarily mean every order is filled exclusively on one venue.
Check the account's region and exit route
Both providers publish EEA documentation covering the Nordic countries, but this is not a promise that every asset, payment method or feature is available to every resident. Check the legal entity in your account agreement, the current product restrictions and the specific deposit method. Displaying prices in SEK, NOK or DKK on Mertiva does not establish a direct deposit route in that currency.
If the objective is self-custody, verify the supported withdrawal network, minimum, charge and any hold before buying. Exchange account balances and a separately created self-custody wallet are different arrangements. A familiar brand name does not make the keys to an exchange balance yours to control.
A practical checklist
- Choose spot trading and confirm that the same asset/currency pair is available on both accounts.
- Compare the signed-in fee tier and a realistic order size, not a promotional headline.
- Include bank or card costs, conversion, the execution price and withdrawal charges.
- Check the provider's legal entity, product restrictions and supported destination network.
Common questions
Is Kraken Pro always cheaper?
No universal result follows from a fee table. Your tier, pair, payment route, execution and withdrawal can change the total. Compare equivalent transactions using current account information.
Does Advanced mean self-custody?
No. The spot exchange balances discussed here remain hosted by the provider. A separate wallet or DEX feature can use a different custody model and must be assessed on its own terms.
Should I move more money onto a platform to reach a lower fee tier?
A fee saving alone is not a reason to increase a balance or trade more. Compare the saving with the additional custody exposure and your actual need to transact.
Published figures & conditions

Kraken Pro standard spot Tier 1 publishes 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker.
Public schedule checked today; USD thresholds; pair, location and account eligibility still matter. Do not reuse the former 0.25% / 0.40% entry rates.
Kraken fee scheduleKraken Pro Tier 2: $2,500+ spot 30-day volume, 0.30% / 0.60%. Tier 3: $10,000+ spot volume or $20,000 assets on platform, 0.22% / 0.38%.
The live table also includes futures-volume qualification; the most favorable qualifying measure applies. These are spot rates, not derivatives fees.
Kraken fee scheduleKraken Instant Buy lists 1% for instant/recurring trades and 1.5% for custom orders, plus a variable spread and potentially payment costs.
Different product from Kraken Pro; membership exemptions and eligibility have separate terms. A trade commission is not total cost.
Kraken fee scheduleCoinbase Advanced directs customers to their signed-in fees page for current rates and qualification criteria.
Exact current rate is account-specific / not verified. The public help page describes separate product volume thresholds and USDC balance criteria. Do not use Coinbase Exchange institutional fees as Advanced retail fees.
Coinbase Advanced feesCoinbase says it adds a spread to simple buy/sell quotes; Advanced interacts with an order book and has no Coinbase-added spread.
This does not remove the market bid/ask spread or slippage. Fee and execution preview remain necessary.
Coinbase pricing disclosuresKraken's EUR SEPA/SEPA Instant routes list a €1 minimum and €0 Kraken deposit fee.
Route availability varies by account/region. Published processing estimate is 0–3 business days or instant, depending on provider. A Swedish bank's SEK→EUR conversion and bank fees are separate. Source updated 2026-10-01.
Kraken cash depositsKraken's EEA debit-card EUR deposit row lists €10 minimum and €0.25 + 3.75%.
This is a funding-method row, not a Pro trading commission. Avoid double-counting if a provider quote already includes a charge.
Kraken cash depositsKraken says withdrawal fees can differ from the public help page; the final amount appears at confirmation.
No fixed BTC withdrawal figure was verified in the extracted table. Treat network, withdrawal minimum and account quote as live inputs, never hard-code a historical BTC fee.
Kraken crypto withdrawalsA limit order can pay taker fees if it immediately matches an existing order; maker treatment depends on adding liquidity.
General execution explanation, not a claim that a limit order guarantees a saving or execution.
